Deer feed in Arkansas.
Arkansas is two deer states wearing one name. The Ozark and Ouachita hill country lives acorn to acorn, and a bad mast year shows up as a hard winter. The Delta farms its deer fat on beans and rice until the combines leave. The rut slides west to east across all of it, and the feeding rulebook changes at the CWD zone line — so an Arkansas program starts with knowing which Arkansas you're standing in.
The Arkansas rut slides west to east
Most of the state breeds in mid-to-late November, but the spread is real. AGFC's fetal data puts peak conception in the western counties anywhere from late October to the third week of November — the north Arkansas Ozarks run earliest — while the eastern Delta peaks from late November into mid-December, with the Mississippi River counties latest of all. That's up to six weeks of drift inside one state line.
The season is built long around it: archery runs from late September all the way through February, and modern gun opens in mid-November statewide. If you hunt the hills, your rut is mostly done by Thanksgiving. If you hunt the Delta, some of your best chasing happens in December while the Ozark hunters are already talking recovery.
The Arkansas calendar, short version
- September–December: high-fat feed and attraction from velvet-strip through the rut. This is Triple Grip season — and on the Delta side it runs deep into December.
- December–February: recovery feeding, and in the hills it's the leverage window. Rutted-out bucks hit winter just as the acorns run thin, and the archery season is still open the whole way.
- March–August: sheds drop, antlers grow, does raise fawns through a hot summer. High-protein feed plus an active mineral site: Grip Grower with Grip Grub in the ground.

In the hills, the winter runs on acorns
The most convincing case for feeding Arkansas deer was written by the government. A long-running Forest Service study in the north Arkansas Ozarks — run cooperatively with the Game and Fish Commission — found that fawn production and winter survival tracked acorn yields almost directly, and mast swung from a few pounds an acre one year to hundreds the next with no pattern to it. Most of what the winter woods offer is low-quality browse deer can barely use, and the study documented die-offs in the lean years.
The number that stops you: the same study found that adding high-quality winter food roughly doubled what the ground could carry — one deer per 21 acres against one per 46 without it. Native browse came up short on protein and phosphorus even in good years. That's the Ozarks and Ouachitas in a sentence: the habitat is beautiful and the pantry is thin, and a feed program fills exactly the gap the research says is there.
The Delta is the opposite problem. Row-crop ground carries deer generously until harvest, then the fields go bare for winter just as the late rut wraps up. Either side of the state, the lean months land after the rut — the difference is whether acorns or combines decide when.
Can you bait deer in Arkansas?
Regulations verified against state wildlife agencies & statute · always confirm current rules locally
On private land outside the CWD Management Zone, yes — year-round. Arkansas has no statewide deer-baiting prohibition; AGFC's regulations put it affirmatively, listing feeding wildlife as legal outside specific exceptions. The exceptions are the map. Inside the CWD Management Zone — roughly the northwest quarter of the state, the Ozarks down through the river valley, plus a band of northeast counties, more than two dozen counties now and growing — feeding wildlife is banned year-round under Code 07.06, with one carve-out: hunting deer and elk over bait on private land from September 1 through December 31. Food plots stay legal in the zone all year.
Public ground is the hard line: on WMAs and National Wildlife Refuges, baiting is completely prohibited under Code 20.05 — even possessing feed there is a violation. The zone's county list moves as new detections come in, so check the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission feeding page and zone map before you feed, and check how you're allowed to put feed out, not just where. For where every other state stands, see deer baiting laws by state.
Always check current state and local wildlife regulations before feeding, baiting, or placing attractants for deer.

When is the rut in Arkansas?
Mid-to-late November for most of the state, but it slides west to east. AGFC's breeding data puts peak conception between late October and the third week of November in the western hill counties, and from late November into mid-December across the eastern Delta — with the Mississippi River counties running latest of all. Anchor your calendar to your side of the state, not a statewide date.
What should I feed deer in Arkansas?
High-fat feed and attractant from September through the rut — which means into December on the Delta side — then keep it running through the late-winter recovery months, especially in the hills where acorns are the whole pantry and some years the pantry is empty. Switch to high-protein feed and an active mineral site from shed drop through late summer. Inside the CWD Management Zone the rules are different: feeding is banned year-round there, with a private-land hunting exception from September 1 to December 31.
Is it legal to bait deer in Arkansas?
On private land outside the CWD Management Zone, yes — Arkansas has no statewide deer-baiting prohibition, and AGFC states plainly that it is legal to feed wildlife outside the listed exceptions. Inside the CWD Management Zone — roughly the northwest quarter of the state plus a band of northeast counties, and growing — feeding wildlife is banned year-round, with one carve-out: hunting deer over bait on private land from September 1 through December 31. On WMAs and National Wildlife Refuges, baiting is completely prohibited; even possessing feed there is a violation. Verify current rules and the zone map with AGFC before you feed.
