Deer feed in Georgia.

Georgia runs a classic Southeastern calendar: the rut peaks in the fall, early-to-mid November across most of the state. But the southwest corner is its own animal — some Flint River counties don't peak until December, even into January. Feed the rut your county is actually on, and you carry a buck from the chase into a hard-horn winter with the condition he built all summer.

Georgia's rut peaks in November — except where it doesn't

For most of Georgia, the math is the familiar Southeastern one: the pre-rut builds through October, breeding peaks early-to-mid November across the Piedmont and the upper Coastal Plain, and the herd settles into winter after. That's a fall rut, and a fall feeding program built around it does the work.

The exception is the southwest — the lower Flint and Chattahoochee counties, where breeding runs weeks later, into December and sometimes January. Georgia's biologists map it county by county from conception dates and collision data. If you hunt that corner, don't feed the state's calendar; feed your county's. The Georgia DNR rut map is the fastest way to pin your date.

The Georgia calendar, short version

  • September–December: high-fat feed and attraction. Early season, the pre-rut, the November peak, and post-rut recovery — later in the southwest. This is Triple Grip season.
  • February–August: sheds drop, antlers grow, does carry and raise fawns. High-protein feed plus an active mineral site: Grip Grower with Grip Grub in the ground.
  • All year: consistency. A site deer trust in September is a site they trust in November.

The full month-by-month table is in the deer feeding calendar — pick Georgia to see it laid out.

Acorns move the herd

Few states swing on mast the way Georgia does. When the white oaks dump, feed-site activity drops across a county overnight and every camera goes quiet at once. The mistake is pulling the program because visits dipped. Hold it steady. The acorns run out — usually mid-season — and the sites that stayed stocked are the ones deer come back to first, right as the rut turns on.

Baiting and feeding rules in Georgia

Regulations verified against state wildlife agencies & statute · always confirm current rules locally

As of the 2026 season, you can legally bait deer on private land anywhere in Georgia — a statewide change made in 2011 — as long as you have written permission to hunt that land. Baiting is not allowed on public land or wildlife management areas, and placing bait can affect how hunting works on the property next door, so boundaries matter. Rules change with legislation and disease findings, so confirm the current rule with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division before you feed, bait, or place an attractant. When is the rut in Georgia?

Most of Georgia peaks in early-to-mid November, from the Piedmont through the upper Coastal Plain. The southwest corner is the exception — some Flint and Chattahoochee River counties don't peak until December or even January. It's a fall rut nearly everywhere, with that late southwest pocket the one to plan around.

What should I feed deer in Georgia?

Run high-fat feed and attractant through early season, the fall rut, and post-rut recovery — roughly September into December for most of the state, later in the southwest. Then switch to high-protein feed and an active mineral site from shed drop through velvet finish. In Georgia, holding the site steady through a heavy acorn year is half the game.

Is it legal to bait deer in Georgia?

As of the 2026 season, baiting deer is legal on private land statewide in Georgia — a change made in 2011 — as long as you have written permission to hunt that land. It is not allowed on public land or wildlife management areas. Rules change, so verify the current rule with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division before you feed, bait, or place an attractant.
