Deer minerals for year-round herd health.

Bigger racks. Healthier herds. It starts in the ground. Minerals are the quiet half of a nutrition program: they don't fill the belly, they help the herd use everything else that does.

01Why deer use mineral sites

Why deer use mineral sites

Whitetail need more minerals than natural forage reliably provides, and their demand is seasonal. A hardened antler is roughly one-fifth calcium and phosphorus. A doe pulls minerals through gestation and pours them out through lactation. When the demand spikes, deer seek concentrated sources, which is why a good mineral site becomes a habit for the whole herd.

That habit is the second benefit. An active mineral site concentrates deer activity at a known point on the property, which makes it one of the most reliable trail-camera survey locations you can run.

When to put out deer minerals.

Late winter into early spring, before antler growth starts and before does hit peak gestation. Usage climbs through spring, peaks in summer, and tapers in fall. A maintained site stays lightly active all year. Timing detail by region is in the deer feeding calendar.

Spring and summer strategy.

Spring rebuilds what winter and the rut took; summer is the year's peak demand, with velvet on the bucks and milk on the does. Run the mineral site alongside a growth feed like Grip Grower through both. One feeds the engine, the other supplies the hardware.

Mineral sites vs feed sites.

Different jobs. A feed site delivers calories and protein. A mineral site delivers the micronutrients that help the herd use them. Serious programs run both, near each other but not in the same dirt, so each site does its work without interference.

When should I put out deer minerals?

Start in late winter or early spring, before antler growth begins and before does hit peak gestation. Mineral use climbs through spring and summer, tapers in fall, and a maintained site stays active year-round. Always check state and local regulations first.

Do deer minerals grow bigger antlers?

Minerals alone do not create bigger racks. A hardened antler is roughly one-fifth calcium and phosphorus, so minerals are a foundation that supports antler growth and overall herd health, working alongside genetics, age, and a complete feed program.

What is the difference between a mineral site and a feed site?

A feed site delivers calories and protein; a mineral site delivers the micronutrients that help the herd use them. They do different jobs, and serious programs run both. Keep them near each other but not in the same dirt.

Do mineral sites work year-round?

A maintained mineral site stays active in every season, but usage peaks from spring through late summer when antlers are growing and does are lactating. Winter visits drop, which makes it a good time to refresh the site.
