Deer feed in Alabama.
This is home ground. Grip Feed is milled in Westover, in Shelby County, and blended around the rut Alabama actually has: one of the latest in the country, peaking from late December through early February, which makes this state's feeding calendar unlike almost anywhere else.
Alabama's late rut changes the math
Most of whitetail country ruts in mid-November. Alabama runs weeks to months later: north Alabama peaks mid-December into early January, and most of the state peaks later still — the last two weeks of January into February. Alabama's biologists trace the spread to decades of restocking that mixed in deer genetics from all over. The consequence is simple and expensive: bucks hit their hardest energy burn in the coldest, barest weeks of the year, and they come out of it with green-up still a month or more away.
That gap is where an Alabama feeding program earns its keep. High-fat feed through the rut and after it bridges a buck from the January chase to the March flush. Feed the gap, and the buck that survived the season starts antler growth from a full tank instead of a deficit.
The Alabama calendar, short version
- September–February: high-fat feed and attraction. Early season, pre-rut staging through fall, the peak rut from late December into February, then recovery. This is Triple Grip season, and it is long here.
- Late February–August: sheds drop, antlers start, does carry and raise fawns through a long, hot summer. High-protein feed plus an active mineral site: Grip Grower with Grip Grub in the ground.
- All year: water and consistency. Alabama summers stress deer as hard as northern winters stress theirs.
The full month-by-month table, with Alabama selected by default, is in the deer feeding calendar.
Mast years
When the white oaks dump, feed-site activity drops statewide, and every camera in the county goes quiet at once. Hold the program steady. Acorns run out, usually in the middle of the season, and the sites that stayed consistent are the ones deer return to first.
Feeding rules in Alabama
Regulations verified against state wildlife agencies & statute · always confirm current rules locally
Alabama regulates both feeding and baiting of deer. Hunting deer over bait on private or leased land requires the state's Bait Privilege License, and baiting on public land is prohibited. Some counties also fall under disease-management rules that can restrict or ban feeding and baiting outright, and requirements change from season to season — so verify the current rules with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources before you feed, bait, or place an attractant. For the full breakdown, see can you bait deer in Alabama?
Always check current state and local wildlife regulations before feeding, baiting, or placing attractants for deer.

When is the rut in Alabama?
Alabama has one of the latest, most variable ruts in the country. Breeding runs from November into February: north Alabama peaks mid-December into early January, while most of the state peaks later, the last two weeks of January into February. That late anchor pushes peak energy demand into the coldest weeks of the year.
What should I feed deer in Alabama?
Follow the late-rut calendar: high-fat feed and attractant from September through February, covering early season, the late rut, and post-rut recovery. Then switch to high-protein feed and minerals from shed drop in late winter through velvet finish in August.
Is it legal to feed deer in Alabama?
Alabama regulates feeding and baiting for deer, including a baiting privilege license system on private land. Rules change year to year, so verify current requirements with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources before feeding, baiting, or placing attractants.
Where can I buy Grip Feed in Alabama?
105 Alabama stores carry Grip Feed, more than any other state, and you can also buy it at the mill in Westover, southeast of Birmingham in Shelby County. Every store is listed on this page by town, and the Find a Store page will find the closest one to your zip. If nothing’s in range, call us and we’ll work on getting Grip Feed into a store close by.
