Deer feed in Florida.
Florida is the hardest state in the country to feed by the calendar, because Florida deer don't agree on one. The rut swings from late summer in the south-central peninsula to February in the western Panhandle — the widest spread of any state. There is no single Florida feeding date. There's your zone's date, and the whole program shifts to meet it.
Florida's rut runs by zone, not by the calendar
Most of whitetail country breeds in mid-November. Florida barely agrees with itself. South Florida deer can breed in late July and August — the earliest rut in the nation — while the western Panhandle stretches all the way into February, closer to neighboring Alabama than to Orlando. Central Florida runs September into October, and the northern zones peak in November. The same month means opposite things at opposite ends of the state.
That's why a Florida program can't be copied off a national calendar. Find your local peak-breeding window, then build the whole feeding year around it: high energy going into and through your rut, protein and minerals coming out of it. Feed the rut your deer are actually on, and you stop guessing.
The Florida calendar, short version
- Around your zone's rut: high-fat feed and attraction through the pre-rut, peak, and post-rut recovery. This is Triple Grip season — and where it falls on the calendar depends entirely on your zone.
- Through the growing season: once bucks harden off and does are carrying, switch to high-protein feed and an active mineral site — Grip Grower with Grip Grub in the ground.
- All year: water and shade. Florida's heat stresses a herd the way a northern winter stresses theirs.
The full month-by-month table, with Florida's zone notes, is in the deer feeding calendar. Pick Florida and it lays the pattern out by zone.
Heat is Florida's winter
Up north, deer fight to survive January. In Florida, the season that tests a herd is summer. Long stretches of heat and humidity push does through lactation and bucks through peak antler growth at the same time the woods are at their most stressful. A digestible, fat-first feed and a mineral site that stays active through July and August do the quiet work here — the kind that shows up in fawn survival and September antler mass, not on a single hunt.
Baiting and feeding rules in Florida
Regulations verified against state wildlife agencies & statute · always confirm current rules locally
As of the 2026 season, you can legally bait deer on private land in most of Florida — but not on wildlife management areas, and not inside the state's CWD Management Zone in the Panhandle, where baiting and feeding are restricted or banned. Florida does not set a statewide volume cap on private-land baiting, but the disease-zone and public-land rules are strict where they apply, and those zone boundaries can move as new cases are found. Confirm the current rule — and the CWD Management Zone map — with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission before you feed, bait, or place an attractant. Always check current state and local wildlife regulations before feeding, baiting, or placing attractants for deer.

When is the rut in Florida?
Florida has the most variable rut in the country. South Florida deer can breed in late July and August, Central Florida runs September into October, the northern zones peak in November, and the western Panhandle stretches into February. Anchor your feeding program to your local zone, not a single statewide date.
What should I feed deer in Florida?
Match the calendar to your zone's rut. Run high-fat feed and attractant through your local pre-rut, rut, and post-rut, then switch to high-protein feed and an active mineral site through the long growing season. Because Florida summers are long and hot, water and minerals carry the herd as hard as the rut does.
Is it legal to bait deer in Florida?
As of the 2026 season, baiting is legal on most private land in Florida, but it is banned on wildlife management areas and inside the Panhandle's CWD Management Zone. Rules and zone boundaries change, so verify the current rule with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission before you feed, bait, or place an attractant.
